Grub Damage

The larvae can be quite sneaky. On the surface, your lawn may look healthy and green, but grubs could be eating away at its roots and, before you know it, causing serious problems.

Grubs are a type of grubs that can seriously damage your lawn. They appear as a “C” shaped figure with a white body and a brown head. They live a few centimeters below the soil surface and feed on grass roots, which can kill parts of the grass and leave recurring brown patches.

Signs that you have a grub infestation:

When it comes to identifying whether or not you have a grub infestation, there are several signs you can look out for:

• Animals digging up your lawn in search of larvae
• You have brown, dead spots on your lawn
• You have sponge-like areas that feel like fresh grass.
• Damaged roots, grass curls up like a carpet
• Moths flying across the surface of your lawn, flowerbed and gardens

The last, most obvious sign is if you physically see grubs in your lawn. To do this, you may need to remove some small patches of grass so you can investigate.

Preventive treatment vs. Curative treatment

If you start to see any of the signs mentioned above, it would be too late to perform a preventative treatment on your lawn. Preventive treatment is applied in the summer months and is used to help prevent future grub larvae from feeding on the grass roots.

If you already have a grub infestation, you will need a curative treatment called Dylox, which can be expensive. Once they leave it, the insects ingest it and alter the functioning of their nervous system. When applying this product, it is best to water the area abundantly to help activate the ingredient and enhance the results.

Repair your lawn

If your lawn has been damaged by a grub infestation and you have treated it appropriately but now must deal with the damage left behind, there are a few options to consider.

One option is to overseed your lawn. After removing damaged areas, apply a handful of seeds to freshly loosened fertilized soil. Another option is to remove dead grass so new growth can occur. Raking over the top layer of thatch can help loosen any areas of dead grass you have, without damaging the roots. Lastly, you can replace the affected areas with grass. This option will be the most expensive but will show results almost immediately.

To achieve the best results with any of these options, you need to make sure you water your lawn properly.
