Kate Siegel on Expanding Her V/H/S Horror Short Into a Feature

Kate Siegel is well known among horror fans for her dynamic range of performances within the genre, often working with her husband and creative partner, Mike Flanagan. Their projects together include (deep breath) oculus, Be quiet (which Siegel co-wrote), Ouija: origin of eviland Gerald’s gameas well as Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House, The Curse of Bly Manor, Midnight massand The Fall of the House of Usher. Now you can add V/H/S/Beyond to that list, with a bit of role reversal, as Flanagan wrote it and Siegel directed it, making his debut behind the camera.

His V/H/S/Beyond The segment is titled “The Stowaway”; It is the last entry of the film besides the conclusion of the frame story. A disturbing mix of first-contact awe and body horror, it follows the uncomfortable but determined Halley (Alanah Pearce) as she wanders a lonely corner of California’s Mojave Desert, intent on capturing evidence of UFO activity in the area. We won’t reveal where his journey leads, but in the build-up to its memorable and gruesome climax, “Stowaway” creates a nuanced portrait of someone who is clearly recovering from the recent trauma in his life and who hopes to find new purpose in his life. his extraterrestrial explorations.

Speaking with VarietySiegel said he would jump at the opportunity to expand Halley’s story: “I would love to make this a feature film. There is a great story that I would love to tell.”

And there is a precedent for that; To date, two feature films have been made that expand their V/H/S origins: 2016 Sirentaken from “Amateur Night” from 2012 V/H/Sand 2022 Children against aliensfrom “Slumber Party Alien Abduction” in 2013 V/H/S/2.

Although it sounds like he had a lot of fun making “Stowaway” and said, “I find it very exciting to have a new way to tell a story,” Siegel won’t be leaving acting to pursue directing full-time. “I’m not going to stop acting; I’m just being a little more demanding now because I have something that demands everything of me and that I feel like doing,” he told the company. “I will always answer the call of a great story, whether as a director, producer or actress.”

As for working with Flanagan, beyond the fact that they are married, she is drawn to his “honesty and respect,” even when he tells her something she may not want to hear (or vice versa): “He will give me the constructive criticism that I need, or I will give him the criticism that he needs… when you are making millions and millions of decisions, the things that come are the most honest and direct.”
