I’ve Changed My Mind On One Of My Most Controversial Decisions (Plus, I Need A New Refrigerator)

I’m starting the new year and I need a new refrigerator. The refrigerator itself is not horrible. It keeps our food cold, although I have to deal with frozen thick whipped cream every morning when I make my coffee. That gets annoying and freezes no matter how you adjust the refrigerator temperature. But that’s a minor annoyance I can deal with and doesn’t make buying a new refrigerator an urgent necessity.

But what really gets to me is our freezer. There should be a continuous drip coming from the ice maker because what happens is the ice gradually builds up at the back.

And as that chunk of ice grows, it prohibits me from pushing the ice container to the back of the freezer. And once the bin is pushed too far forward, almost all of the ice that falls from the ice maker flows back behind the ice bin and begins to fill the bottom of the freezer. And if I ignore it for a couple of months, I’ll have a real mess on my hands…

So yesterday, when I walked into the kitchen after lunch and saw that the freezer door was open (because the ice buildup had pushed it too far forward due to the jostling of the ice bin), I had to take an hour out of my afternoon and clean out the freezer, removing about a sink full of ice and cutting away that big mound of ice in the back with a knife.

So I hope this year I can get a new refrigerator with an ice maker inside. The challenge with getting a new refrigerator for our kitchen is that the refrigerator cabinet is only 30 inches wide.

Now, if I get my wish and can completely redo our kitchen along with our addition, and get all the new cabinets the way I want, I could possibly move things a little to have three or four more inches. there. But that will only reduce my counter space, and I don’t know if I want to give up counter space to have more refrigerator space. We don’t really need a larger refrigerator, but the problem is that there isn’t a huge selection of narrower, 30-inch-wide refrigerators.

So I’m not really sure how that will all work, but I do know that this freezer is driving me crazy. I’ve been fighting this ice maker for at least two years (probably more) and it’s winning. He may win the battles, but he won’t win the war. 😀

But in addition to a new refrigerator, I also want a new stove and *drum roll please* a new dishwasher.

Let it be known that I have changed my mind about not having a dishwasher. 😀 I think it was in 2019 (before 2020 completely derailed so many things) that I decided I didn’t want a dishwasher in my kitchen anymore. It was one of the most controversial decisions I’ve ever made about anything in my house. It seemed like some people were literally mad at me for suggesting such a thing. 😀

Well, fast forward a few years and I never managed to convert the dishwasher space into cabinet space. I still don’t use the dishwasher. I don’t even remember the last time I turned on the device. It’s been over five years and I’ve only used it a few times since we got it.

But now I’ve decided I want a dishwasher and I want to use it as more than just a drainer (which our current dishwasher is). So if I have the opportunity to redo the kitchen this year, when we do the addition, I will include a dishwasher in the kitchen. And I will be using it.

What changed my mind is that a lot has changed since 2019. Matt and I went from never having people in our house to now having people in our house regularly. I cook for a crowd once a week (except we take time off during the holiday season) and we always use paper plates, plastic utensils, bottled water, etc.

In fact, I’d like to get away from those things and use real plates, non-disposable cutlery, and real glasses for drinks. But I also don’t want to have to wash all that by hand when everyone leaves. So with our current lifestyle, it would be very nice to have a dishwasher that can do the job quickly, efficiently and completely. As long as it’s a panel dishwasher, and you don’t have a dishwasher visible from the front door, I’m really excited to have a dishwasher that works.

But again, we’ll have to see how this all works out. I would love to remodel the kitchen at the same time we tackle the addition, since part of the addition will probably affect the back wall of the kitchen anyway. In the meantime, I’m going to start planning and dreaming about my new kitchen with a leak-free ice maker, a usable freezer that doesn’t fill up with ice, and a working dishwasher.

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
