Mushrooms and Your Grass | Dr. Green Lawn Care Services

Fungi are alive and well, especially on lawns that retain moisture or are overwatered. Mushrooms are a fungus! These are an indication that waterlogged soil provides the perfect conditions for these plants to take root and grow.

Why are they appearing?

With the amount of rain we have received to date and the fall weather to visit, it has provided the perfect conditions for the fungus to thrive. Additionally, if there are trees on the property with shallow roots, fungi thrive in areas where they can cling to anything that holds water in order to flourish.

What can I do with them?

While there are no controls, biological or chemical, that can or will reduce fungal growth, there are still ways to reduce it! It is important to keep these points in mind.

  1. Water your lawn only early in the morning to allow excess moisture to dry out during the growing season.
  2. Mow regularly (weekly) and never remove more than a third of the plant to prevent the grass from darkening or causing the root system to become waterlogged.
    • As the weather cools, we know you’re eager to put away your tools, but be sure to keep mowing your lawn throughout the fall to ensure this moisture-filled season doesn’t backfire and produce more fungus.
  3. Be sure to bag cuttings to reduce excess buildup that prevents proper drainage.
  4. Be sure to pick up natural debris (i.e. sticks, leaves, etc.) as they create the perfect habitat for mushrooms to grow.
  5. Gardens, patios or paths that do not receive full or partial sunlight should not be overwatered. This rule will reduce or prevent the spread of moss (slimy green fungus) and fungus.

Are they safe to eat?

Mushrooms found in your lawn or garden are not edible in any form. In fact, they carry a risk of disease. Consult your local clinic if you discover that a loved one has ingested wild mushrooms on your property.

In conclusion

Our seasons are short and we appreciate all the homeowners who work with us to avoid the many conditions that can cause problems in our beautiful green spaces that we all strive to achieve.
